海角社区 professor presents paper at international conference

Dr. John W. Sutherlin, associate professor of political science at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, presented a research paper at the International Organization of Social and Behavioral Research (IOSSBR) in Biloxi, Miss. on Oct. 19.

Sutherlin's paper, 鈥淭he Syrian Dilemma: A U.S. Led Invasion or a U.N. Sponsored Resolution,鈥 draws from over two years of research, and focuses on situations in the Middle East such as, the crisis in Syria and its impact on other regional issues, including Iran's nuclear program and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

鈥淭here is never an end to the amount of research that can be done or is needed, in reference to the Middle East,鈥 remarked Sutherlin.

鈥淚 try to include students in some aspect of the research process so they can understand how to take an idea and turn it into a conference paper and then, with lots of effort, into a peer-reviewed journal article.鈥

Last year, Sutherlin published several articles on women's issues in the Middle East and North Africa following the 鈥淎rab Spring.鈥  He is currently working to expand that study to include other minority groups and other nations in the region.

Sutherlin earned a B.A. from Louisiana Tech University, and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of New Orleans. He has taught at 海角社区 for over six years.
