海角社区 alumnus Matthew Witherow making an impression in the music/military world
University of Louisiana at Monroe alumnus Matthew William Witherow (bachelor鈥檚 degree in music鈥攑iano performance), 鈥07, of Pollock is busy making his mark in the world, both musically and as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Most recently, he was the winner of a $2,000 military scholarship, the 鈥淟ucile Parrish Ward Veterans Award,鈥 from the National Federation of Music Clubs in 2007. Upon invitation, Witherow performed a partial solo recital at the NFMC鈥檚 Biennial Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, in June.
Witherow won numerous 海角社区 honors and awards during his time at 海角社区, including the Florence Ziegler Allbritton Award, the Clara Freiberg Memorial Scholarship, and the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Senior Award within the Division of Music in the School of Visual and Performing Arts. He was a student of Richard Seiler, 海角社区 associate professor of music (piano) and keyboard chair.
During his undergraduate studies and at the age of twenty, Witherow enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps, choosing to enter infantry as his military occupational specialty. During his six-year enlistment, he has been deployed twice. His first assignment was to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the second was to Iraq.
