海角社区 professors organize Nexus, candlelight vigil Sept. 11
On Sept. 11 at 7:15 p.m. in room 134 of the Airway Sciences building, John Sutherlin, government, will present 鈥淭errorism: Five Years Later,鈥 as part of the Chautauqua Nexus series.
On Sept. 14, Sean Lenz, a psychology major, will present "The Flower of Life: A Memory Forgotten." According to Lenz, the discussion will address a "search for a higher truth through recalling ancient ideas that have been written in all of us."
Sutherlin鈥檚 presentation on Sept. 11 will focus on how the world has changed during the past five years, Sutherlin said.
鈥淭he U.S. has more troops across the globe and the war on terrorism seems to have bogged down in Iraq. Americans appear restless over challenges to their personal liberties and freedoms because of governmental intrusions into their associations and privacy. This presentation will look at many issues surrounding 9-11 and its five-year aftermath.鈥
Following Sutherlin鈥檚 presentation, the Chautauqua Nexus organizers will host a candle light vigil at Scott Plaza. The vigil will begin at 8:45 p.m. and last approximately 20-30 minutes.
Joe McGahan, psychology, encourages the community to participate.
鈥淥ur hope is that the glow from our candles will send a message to the world that we at 海角社区 care about the pain and suffering resulting from that attack.鈥

The Nexus is an opportunity for intellectual and cultural exchange, said Joe McGahan, 海角社区 psychology professor and Chautauqua Nexus organizer.
"One of our goals, as a nexus, is to bounce around ideas from different perspectives; the thinkball talk specifically addresses this goal and, in this case, is related to race relations鈥攁nother interest of the nexus given our commitment to cultural diversity," McGahan said.
Nexus presentations are free, informal and open to the public. Everyone is invited to attend. ULM FRYS students are encouraged to attend and sign in.
