海角社区's Black History Month Program to be held Feb. 24

MONROE, LA鈥 海角社区 Cultural Diversity Council and the Office of International Student Programs and Cultural Affairs present 鈥淎 Black History Program鈥 at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 24, at Bayou Pointe Event Center.

The program will feature keynote speaker, Dr. Stephen Peters. Peters has spent over 37 years in the education realm as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of secondary education, and superintendent. Most of his experiences have been in schools with significant, quick growth, resulting in both national and state blue-ribbon distinction.

Dr. Peters is the past President of the Board of Directors of the International Literacy Association and President of The Peters Group, a national education consulting company. Dr. Peters is also a best-selling author of several books, including 鈥淐hoosing to Believe: Creating a Framework for School Success,鈥 鈥淒o You Know Enough About Me To Teach Me,鈥 and 鈥淚nspired to Learn: Why We Must Give Children Hope.鈥

鈥淲e are excited to experience the passion and enthusiasm that Dr. Peters conveys when he speaks of cultivating diversity and cultural awareness in our educational systems and practices,鈥 said Gina White, Director of International Student Programs and Cultural Coordinator in 海角社区鈥檚 Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.听

This year鈥檚 program will also highlight the talent of 海角社区 students and youth within the community through vocal, instrumental, and dance performances.

Randall Hughes, the Vice President of 海角社区鈥檚 Cultural Diversity Council, said the Black History Month program showcases black students, young and old, who can achieve as vastly as those from the past.

鈥淭he Black History Month program gives people of African descent at 海角社区 the feeling of 鈥榖elongingness,鈥欌 Hughes said. 鈥淔or 海角社区 to put an emphasis on Black History Month not only reaches the students on campus but also causes a chain reaction to the high schools around Monroe and West Monroe.鈥

This year鈥檚 Black History Month theme is 鈥淏lack Resistance鈥 to remember the historic and ongoing oppression African Americans face. The theme embraces achievements, successes, and progress Black people have made through resistance. According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, 鈥渢his is a call to everyone鈥 to study the history of Black Americans鈥 responses to establish safe spaces, where Black life can be sustained, fortified and respected.鈥

Below are additional activities hosted on campus to celebrate Black History Month.

CDC Jiggerobics:

海角社区鈥檚 Cultural Diversity Council will host a jiggerobics exercise class at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb 16 in the Activity Center.听

Let鈥檚 Talk About It:

海角社区鈥檚 National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will present a panel discussion about real world problems in the African-American community at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb 28 in Stubbs 100.
